Background of the Study
The informal transport sector is a vital component of urban mobility, yet gender roles within this sector often reflect entrenched social hierarchies. In Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, traditional expectations have historically dictated the roles of men and women in transport services (Chukwu, 2023). Men predominantly occupy positions as drivers and owners, while women are frequently relegated to supportive or less visible roles such as ticketing and maintenance (Eze, 2024). This gendered division of labor is reinforced by socio-cultural norms and economic disparities. However, recent shifts in urban dynamics and policy reforms have opened up new opportunities for re-evaluating these roles (Nnadi, 2025). The study examines how gender roles are defined, maintained, and challenged within the informal transport sector. It considers the impact of these roles on income distribution, occupational safety, and overall economic empowerment. In doing so, the analysis employs a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on sociological theories and economic data to provide a holistic view of gender dynamics in urban transport (Ude, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Onitsha North, gender roles in the informal transport sector continue to reflect discriminatory practices that limit opportunities for women. These roles contribute to unequal income distribution and restrict career advancement for female workers (Okoro, 2024). The problem is exacerbated by a lack of supportive policies that recognize the potential of women in this sector. Consequently, gender disparities persist, undermining overall economic empowerment and social equity. There is a clear need to investigate these dynamics to inform policy interventions that promote more equitable participation (Nwankwo, 2025).
